Live Review: Boy & Bear 8/8/2011
8:00pm in Sydney and a crowd gathers at the Apple Store on George Street. The 3rd
of August brought Australia’s darlings and the southern hemisphere’s answer to ‘Mumford & Sons’ to play a free gig to fans in anticipation of their debut album release “Moonfire”.
Apple stores are by the very nature a thing of beauty, all sleek lines and glass walls but after seeing the 10th person in a row being told off for touching the iPads I did have to ask the staff, why not just pack them away? It takes too long apparently and as it turns out you can trust Boy & Bear fans not to pilfer the merchandise.
The band took to the stage to perform with bongos and banjos, melodic interpretations of all their hits to date. Particularly enjoyable was the single Milk and Sticks which has a pacey driving rhythm to it not unlike the anthemic Rabbit Song. 8 songs later the band left the stage but hung around to sign lanyards for the fans, for those lucky enough to make the cut for tonight’s show they will be telling this story for years when Boy & Bear sell out stadiums at capacity.
