1st MUSIC REVIEW!
I've not had the chance to go to any music festivals or concerts this year or last - mainly because I've been on the road as a backpacker travelling around Asia and Australia on the tightest of budgets that wouldn't let me buy a Big Mac, nevermind a festival ticket!
So... I decided that it's about time I wrote a review thingy here - and with no other available options - I turned to VH1 on the telly. Much to my instantly hightened level of excitement, was "I'm in the mood for dancing" blaring out of the speakers.
It's a great little number this song! I challenge the hardest and manliest men the world over not to be able to watch this video without tapping a left (or right foot) at least 47 times and conducting at the very least - 1 shoulder shimmy!
The video is a bit scary though! Picture this... seeing you're Mum 20 or 30 years ago (depending on how old you are) with her equally-aged mates wearing tight lycra pink leggings and a rather revealing low cut top. Now picture her dancing around rather awkwardly but, she's having the time of her life. It's a tad cringe-worthy but at the same time, slightly sexy. It's like cougars on heat! You know it's bad but you can't look away!
The song is by the Nolan Sisters - an Irish and English group of ladies who had their best chart success in the late 70's and early 80's. This hit climbed to number 3 in the UK charts in 1979 and only tip-toed in to the Australian charts 2 years later at number 43 - which confirms a few things when it comes to Aussie music tastes... 1) The land-down-underians need to learn to appreciate good music when they hear it and 2) The Antipodeans (I love big words) need to catch up with the times - a 2 year delay for such an anthem to reach the airwaves is just not acceptable!
The lead singer's my favourite - with the nicest ass and greatest capability when it comes to shaking thoughs hips! This is especially forced upon the viewing audience on the offset of the video! An ass wiggle for perhaps a little too many seconds - 8 to be precise when only 4 were ever needed. But then again, her dark-bobbed-haired sister in the backgrounds not that bad either. I'd be happy to marry either to be honest.
The group have had other hits but nothing as great and as catchy as this!
In terms of lyrics - the Nolans kept it simple. Simply by repeating the same 12 words 89 times or thereabouts throughout the song;
I'm in the mood for dancin' romancin'
Ooh I'm given' it all tonight
I'm in the mood for chancin'
I feel like dancin'
Ooh so come on and hold me tight
With simplicity as its detail - how can anyone fail to pick up this amazingly catchy tune and hum it away to themselves for the rest of the day?
However, a song about dancing, romancing and giving it all - there is somewhat a lack of enthusiasm by the group throughout the video.
There are shoulder shimmys, there are hypnotising hip wiggles and the odd twirl thrown in for equal measure but at no point at all is there a big-box-little-box or a sprinkler move pulled off!
Now, if I was genuinely in the mood for all that dancing and romancing, so much so that I decided to sing about it - I'd be doing cartwheels and splits and jumping around the floor like a rabbit injected with 6 syringes of redbull! But no - nothing like that for the Nolan girls and as such I'm giving their performance a 4/10 but a staggering 9.44 for the music!
