I was thinking the other day about why at 30 years of age, I am still confused about what I want to do,, who I am and where I am going. I thought there must be a reason for it and so I looked back to the year that I was born for a little insight. In 1979 post it notes were invented, the disease control centre reported it’s first known case of aids, Mel Gibson stars in Mad Max and Sony bought out the walkman. Yes these things have had an impact on my life but surely they are not the reason that I cant ever make a decision, that I party hard on the weekends only to feel low on the week days. They can not be the reason that I try to find hidden meaning in everything, that I love my family but then fight with them in the same breath, that I constantly want more, I have a rebellious streak, and yet I am attention seeking. Surely this is not the reason that I have an obsession of looking good and want to fly off to another country at the drop of a hat. So I thought I should dig a little deeper. This resulted in me taking a look at the top 10 songs for that year. I chuckled to myself as I realised I had found the answers to all my own questions.
This is what I found....Chic had told me about Good Times yet Pink Floyd were telling me to be Comfortably Numb. The Police were gave me hope that someone would save my soul if I sent them a message in a bottle and the pretenders made sure I knew it was ok to get attention. Donna Summer got me thinking about Hot Stuff and Sister Sledge sang about the importance of Family. The Sugar Hill Gang were totally confused about whether they were rock, pop or rap? Michael Jackson demanded that we shouldn’t stop until we got enough. After all this Pink Floyd turned around and told me that I didn’t need an education and The Clash supported this theory and said we should all piss of to London.
So there you have it folks. It’s not my fault! It’s the music told me to do it. Mmm I wonder what this year is telling me?
