I have been trying to work this one out. In the 80s we had synth-heavy tunes and a lot of drama and creativity in film clips. Then the 90s kind of went uber shallow, this is not always a bad thing, but it was like the start of music that relied more on the sense of the moment than an lasting feeling. Now, the 2000s are at that stage where 00s music kinda sounds to be just like 90s music did... except for the early stuff which I link back more to the 80s. I just think, we won't be able to step back and really understand what we are listening to probably for another 20 years when we sit back and think "ahhhh that was the good old days". I should now stop confusing myself.
